Coordinates towards the transformation of philanthropy

Shifting power relations between North and South for more effective local impact.

Why is it necessary to transform philanthropy?

What do we want to change?

From the Global South there is a consensus on the urgency of transforming current power relations in how capital – economic, human, technical-scientific, cultural – is transferred to beneficiary communities. We need to question the structures and dynamics inherited from colonialism and the present North-South hierarchy. A step in that direction is to stop assuming and explaining the needs, challenges, opportunities and solutions of local communities through what we at Pur-ple we call #privilegedsplaining, «explaining and deciding on their behalf» without respecting their voice, their ideas, worldviews, practices and experiences.

What is our contribution?

Pur-ple developed this document together with TAI, oriented to action -of thought and practice- that aims to awaken reflections through coordinates, examples and provocative questions, on how to carry out the process of deconstruction and transformation of philanthropic organizations to achieve a more significant impact at the local level.
